This release was the first Martinu disc that Hogwood recorded, and it's excellent. The playing of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is generally superb, despite the annoyingly clicking keys of the oboes. Hogwood has chosen a generous program, ranging from the jazzy Le revue de cuisine, with its riotous Charleston, to the alternately brooding and magical Toccata e due canzone, one of Martinu's last and greatest works in his baroque manner. Indeed, this disc makes an ideal introduction to one of the most appealing and purely enjoyable composers of the first half of the 20th century. --ClassicsToday.com
